Leeds Wake Up Shake Up 2017

Leeds Wake Up Shake Up Final took place at Ralph Thoresby HS on Tuesday 11th July.

The event saw schools from each area of the city come together to perform their fantastic routines in the school theatre.  Performances were judged by Ralph Thoresby GCSE dance students who also took part in the fun initiative when they in primary school.

Wake Up Shake Up is designed to integrate short bursts of physical activity into the school day.  Using simple aerobic movements that a whole class or playground can join in with.  It is clearly loved by children as it allows them to get creative designing a routine to perform to their favourite music.

The winning KS2 team was Holy Rosary and St Anne's (photo below and top leading) who are clearly a talented group after recently getting to West Yorkshire finals in athletics and netball.  The winning KS1 team was Meanwood Primary who performed a lovely routine to the Trolls September song.

Active Schools Wake Up Shake Up Training 2017!

Twenty two primary school teachers and twenty leaders from across Leeds came together at Alwoodley Primary School to participate in Wake Up Shake Up training.  Wake Up Shake Up is simple aerobic activity that is performed to music.  Y5/6 students worked alongside their teachers to design a routine to music that they could then teach to other groups.  The programme was developed to get children more active throughout the school day.

Wake Up Shake Up is simple so anyone can join in the routines it is most commonly delivered in the playground before school and during playtimes.  It is also used to break up long classroom periods in the school day to 'wake' and energise children.  Among obvious health benefits short bursts of physical activity has been proven to improve memory retention and behaviour.

Teachers left the course empowered and motivated to organise lots of delivery back in their own schools and also prepare routines for the Summer competitions.

The course was delivered by Nicola Booth Dance Coach from Leeds Rhinos Foundation.  Thank you to Alwoodley PS for hosting the event.
